At Honest Forestry LLC, our mission is to provide forestry services that exceed industry standards in quality, integrity, and long-term results. We believe that stewardship matters, not only as professionals, but as people accountable for how we care for the land and serve others.
We recognize that resources are hard-earned, and landowners deserve real value for their investment. That is why we are committed to delivering affordable, high quality service rooted in honesty, transparency, and sound judgment.
Our business is built around one central focus ,you, the client. Your land, your vision, and your objectives guide every recommendation we make. We do not manage forests for outside agendas; we work to help your property flourish according to your goals.
We believe good forestry is an act of stewardship. Every forest is unique, and thoughtful management should reflect that. We tailor each plan to the land you cherish and the future you hope to build, striving to conduct our work in a way that honors both our clients and our calling.
Caleb Long founded Honest Forestry LLC on faith, integrity, and a commitment to responsible land stewardship. With over 12 years of forestry experience in West Virginia, he specializes in timber cruising, marketing, and wildlife-focused forest management.
His work is guided by the belief that we are called to steward the land wisely and serve others honestly. As a family-oriented West Virginia native, Caleb values community, hard work, and treating every client’s property with the same care he would his own.
West Virginia is home to some of the most valuable and sought-after hardwood species in the country. However, with a limited number of mills and each mill producing different products, knowing who to sell to is just as important as knowing what you have.
Not every mill buys the same species, grades, or products. That’s where we come in.
Our job is to maximize your return.
We begin by professionally cruising your timber to determine species, volume, quality, and market potential. From there, we identify the most competitive local buyers and strategically match your timber to the mills that need it most. By understanding mill inventories, product demands, and current market trends, we position your timber where it brings the highest value.
We continuously monitor:
Current stumpage prices
Local and regional mill inventories
Market demand trends
Export markets and foreign policy impacts
Our goal: optimize your timber sale while protecting the long term health of your forest.
When you work with us, you’re not just selling trees, you’re making a strategic, informed decision about your land’s future.
You could be qualified for a major reduction in property taxes. You are required to have a plan prepared by a professional forester to enroll. We write plans through the Forest Stewardship Program that outline recomendations for 10 years. There is often cost sharing funds from the WV Division of Forestry. The NRCS has cost sharing programs for the CAP 106 forest managent plan and we write them as well!

Understanding what your timber is worth starts with accurate measurement and professional evaluation. We provide detailed timber cruising and appraisal services to determine species, volume, quality, and current market value.
Whether you are considering a timber sale, estate planning, property purchase, or long-term forest management, our goal is to give you clear, reliable information so you can make confident decisions about your land.
Your forest is an investment and we help you understand its true value.
West Virginia’s forests were shaped by natural disturbances like fire, wind, and selective mortality. Today, many stands are aging into closed-canopy conditions that limit sunlight, reduce understory growth, and diminish wildlife habitat.
Properly planned timber harvests can restore the diversity that deer, turkey, and grouse depend on while generating income for you!
Wild turkey
Poults rely heavily on insects during their first 4–6 weeks.
Insect abundance increases significantly in young forests with sunlight reaching the ground.
Regeneration harvests improve brood mobility and predator detection.
Oak regeneration supports long-term mast (acorn) production.
The Result: Strategic harvesting improves brood habitat and strengthens long-term turkey populations.
Whitetail Deer
Young forests (0–15 years old) produce substantially more browse than mature closed stands.
Timber harvest stimulates stump sprouts and regenerating hardwoods rich in protein.
Dense regeneration provides thermal cover and fawning security.
The Result: Timber harvest increases natural forage and cover without installing food plots or artificial improvements.
Grouse
Grouse populations depend on young forest habitat (5–20 years old).
Declines occur where forests age uniformly.
Patch cuts and regeneration harvests significantly improve nesting and brood success.
The Result: Active forest management is one of the most effective tools for sustaining grouse in Appalachia.
